Word cannot do these things, maybe something else?
Dear friends,
It could possibly be that this is not the appropriate form to assess question but I will try anyway. There are or three major features that I was waiting for word to implement for many years: 1. Allowing footnotes in one column to two column text. 2. A way of creating footnotes to footnotes. 3. A way of creating in-line footnotes: NOT: 1. ewewew 2. fdfdfdfd 3. fddfdfd BUT RATHER: 1.dsdsdsds 2.asasasas. 3.asasasasa Number one has indeed been implemented. However regarding two and three there is still no elegant way to handle this. If Microsoft Word cannot elegantly handle this does anybody have an alternative idea? I mean even superpowered programs like Adobe in design which I know how to use does not have a automated way to handle these two aspects. Thank you all very much. Susan |

I think that here you are asking for a more mobile sort of Note, generally "InLineNotes". The closest that I can see being supported by MSWord without implementing Macros is "Comments". I suspect that you will require an MSWord Macro, written in VBA. Imagine that after typing some text you want to insert a reference to a note after the text "southern side" and that you want the text of the note to be housed after the text "driveway". You select the text in between these two points (as shown in the attached image), and run the macro (perhaps by a shortcut key). The Macro pops up an Input-box, you type in the text of the note, and choose "OK". The macro then inserts the note text, with a bookmark, after "driveway", and inserts a sequentially-numbered ({SEQ} field) after "southern side, and the job is done. On your part:- (a) Shortcut key to run the macro (b) Text of the Note to be typed in. Result:- (c) A note placed where YOU want it (d) Your note on display. There are many variations. Instead of an InputBox you could use a user form with a few buttons to indicate where the Note was to be placed; You could elect to assign different character styles to different types of Note; You could have options to Hide or Delete certain notes; ... Is this close to what you want? Cheers, Chris |

Footnote pains
First of all, thank you very much for your help and attention.
While I seem to have more or less understood what you're saying, I am really looking for an animated way to do this with a "what you see is what you get" preview in real-time. It is very frustrating that even a program like InDesign does not make this possible. There is an add-in for InDesign that makes the footnotes "in-line", as to say and it costs almost $500! The other issue (footnotes to footnotes) would seem to make perfect sense in a scholarly work, which is what I'm working on, where I am writing a translation of a text in the footnotes, and adding source material for that translation in footnotes to footnotes. I think there is a program called NotaBenna that does this but the learning curve is so steep so I'm not going to try, and therefore I was asking if anybody is aware of a more elegant and easy solution to my predicament thank you Susan |

Have you looked at the citation features? (Most of the "citation styles" are out of date.) |

Did you mean "animated" or "automated"? Macros are free, hence my question about a macro solution: "Is this close to what you want?" $Price seems to be a hurdle for you. Thanks, Chris |
