Default Shared Template Not Persistent. Have to enable each time?

I am wanting to share a template with my team. Using Mac Word, I've posted the DOTM file on the group share. And while we can access the template and enable it, staying enabled isn't persistent between sessions. That is, each user the user opens Word, they have to manually re-enable the template file.

I've read here that the workaround is to have to copy the template from the share to the user's local Template folder. Something like: Distributing macros to other users

Is that truly the way it works? You have to copy it each time to make sure you've got the latest?
