The post title pretty much covers it. I'm trying to change the appearance of a document to a standard for the document type - in this case, a draft of guidance content. I created a style set to mirror what the content looks like when it is published (saves questions for management about why things look different). I have a new document that needs to be updated with fonts and spacing consistent with the rest of its brethren. I open up my design tab, click on the style set that should do the trick and ... nothing. The H1 font in the style set I applied is Ariel Narrow, but the H1 font even after I apply the correct set is still Cambria.
Is this one of those things where Word is still weird, even when you more or less know what you're doing? -mpp |

I don't think it is weird, just complex.
The formatting of your content (outside of tables) comes from 1. The paragraph style + character style. These styles can inherit their properties from other styles, color theme palette or font theme 2. Local formatting which can override anything above. This local formatting can inherit theme properties too. When you apply a style set, you are importing style information but as you can see above there are other things that might be overriding the 'style settings'. The questions I would ask are: Is the style built-in? Is there local formatting applied which overrides the style? Does the applied style exist in the style set? Does that style have attributes based on themes? If so, did you change the color and font themes too?

I think Andrew has covered much of it.
