What Do these boxed characters mean?
Attempting to assist a user. Not sure what the boxed "i |2" represent at the end of this users sentence. Are they necessary? Can they simply be deleted w/o causing an issue? Thanks!

These are likely footnotes from a conversion from pasting or converting documents.
Make a copy of the document. Delete them in the copy. Is there a problem?

Typically, they would be endnote & footnote references, respectively. What happens when you double-click on one?
