Where is Select All in Quick Access Tool Bar?
What happened to my Quick Access Tool Bar? I am only able to put Print Preview on it. I use Select All and Insert Text Box a lot, and they are no longer available, even on the drop down add-in list. I am using Word 2016 which I thought would not have updates, but somehow it has been "updated" and I want it the way it was! It used to be in the middle, where it was convenient, now it is on the far left. I use a Dell desktop and Windows 10. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you. |

Modifying the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) in Microsoft Word
Is your QAT below your Ribbon? As far as I know, nothing has "happened" to the QAT since Word 2016. In is still getting security updates but should not be getting feature updates. |

Quick Access Tool Bar
It is above the tool bar. There is a drop down list to add items, but neither the text box nor select all are on it.
I agree, I didn't expect "updates" except for security, but something has changed. |

Check More commands to get access to more commands.

I did check "more commands". I found the text box one listed under "insert text box". I can find absolutely nothing for Select All.
I tried to search it under "Tell me what you want to do". No helpful information, but it does appear at the top of the list under recently searched, and is active with a familiar icon. So I guess I can use that or re-create it if I search for something else, But I'd really like to have my old QAB icon back. There is a command under "more commands" called Edit. I have no idea what that does. Thanks for your attention. |

Definitely available in Word 2016. Go to File|Options|Quick Access Toolbar>All Commands:Select All.
If you can't find it there, that suggests your Office installation has developed a fault. Try repairing it. Personally, though, I think using that would have to be waaay slower than just pressing Ctrl-A.

I agree with Paul. Ctrl+A is much quicker.
However, in the dialog it is available under Home Tab > Select All. You could also just right-click on it in the Home Tab and assign it to your QAT. |

The list of functions that can be added to the QAT when clicking the "new" "Customize Quick Access Toolbar" is new, and I found confusing at first. That is the button I want to remove.
Any item you find in the existing Ribbons and most drop-downs in the ribbons can be right-clicked and added to the QAT. The Select All command is On the Home Ribbon, Editing section, "Select" drop-down list, Select All. Another option, a little extreme, is to Customize the Ribbon with a custom Ribbon and add the tools you use there and make that Custom ribbon the first Ribbon item, before Home in the list. |

Select all in Quick Access
Thank you so much, everyone. It definitely wasn't in the customize drop-down box.
Ctrl+A worked, but I am really a point-and-clicker. Following instructions, I found it under Home>Editing, R clicked, and voila! it's right where I wanted it to be! In the meantime I checked, and I definitely do have 2016. Someone mentioned "repair"--does that mean reinstall? Thank you again. |

No, a repair and a reinstall are quite different things. Indeed, there are two repair options - Quick and Online. Both are found by going to the Windows Control Panel, clicking on the Office entry and choosing Change (or Modify if you access the feature via Start|Settings).

You should be able to find Select All in the "All Commands" category at File > Options > Quick Access Toolbar.

My preference is to store this and other customizations in one or more Global Templates. Unlike Ribbon Customizations, QAT customizations can be stored in files other than the default through the user interface. |

Thank you to both Charles and Italophile. Although I have used Word for 30 years and regularly produce newsletters and flyers, it is obvious I am a first-grader. I will save all of this information and try to improve.
In the meantime-- Select all is working well. Insert text box is erratic. I often get what looks like a picture box, but with no picture, no swivel handle, no way to insert text, but has the format box on the upper right corner that allows you to move with text. I call this one a jpg box. Sometimes there is also an insertion point to draw my own text box, then I can delete this other one.Sometimes there is an additional text box about 1 1/2 inches high by 1/2 inch wide, where I can insert text into the jpg box. Using the ribbon, insert, text, text box is also erratic. The only way that is really reliable is to use one of the templates -- I use the simple one -- and delete the included text. The draw text box may or may not work. Sometimes I get a 1" square text box, which I can enlarge. Sometimes I get the jpg box and an insertion point. It may or not be possible to delete the jpg box and keep the text box. This is very frustrating. Although at an elementary level I have been able to make it do what I want it to, using text boxes ranging from a single letter size to an entire page, with boxes on top of boxes. I need to be able to that again and I don't know where to turn. |

Once you have a text box you like, you can save it to that gallery.
The command to do that is at the bottom of the menu to insert a text box. This is one of the building blocks. To start to get a handle on Word... Basic Concepts of Microsoft Word - from Shauna Kelly |
