Default DOC file somehow uses two templates; how to unify them?

I'm writing a DOC file in Word for Mac and noticed that the template has changed and half of the existing file now is in a different template than the original one, while the other half remains in the original template. I want to unify both parts under the original one. I thought I could just select the text to be changed, then click on the desired template's icon and be done with it. But that hasn't worked. There surely must be some simple way to do this. God forbid I need to rewrite the wayward half of the file!! There must be some way to do this. Help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Could you show us a sample? You can make a copy of your document from which you remove any sensitive content. Upload the copy here by using the Go Advanced button and then clicking attachments.

Note that template has a specific meaning in Word, and a single document can only be associated with one template (*.dotx or *.dotm file).

"Template" in Word jargon is a special kind of Word file. I think you mean pattern.
