to a newbie, the instructions to start page nmbering after TOC is awful
I cannot get numbering to start after TOC in WORD 2007
I don't understand pagebreaks either I moved the cursor to the bottom of TOC and clicked pagebreak Then I opened the footer of the next pgae. then I held pagenumber FORMAT I selected START at 1 the page number of chapter 1 come su as 12 makes no sense. design for barriers to entry, is WORD. nothing is intuitive. |

Headers, footers and page numbering are all properties of sections, not pages. So you should add a section break after the TOC, not a page break.
Page breaks are very simple - they force the following content onto a new page. |

See Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP.
While you can feel free to vent, nothing you write here is read or heard by anyone at Microsoft. This is a user-to-user support forum about Word. |

Depending on assumptions, expectations and experience, this is always true.

I did Word 2010 Essential Training, Word 2010: Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts, a class focusing on Styles (I should have done this second!), one on Forms, and one on Creating Long Documents, which made me realize how poorly our long documents were being done. We had 2010 at the time and have since changed to Office 365. I can't remember whether there were 2007-based classes, but it's worth a check. It's the best free training I could readily find. There are also more topic-focused videos on YouTube which can be helpful for picking up specific functions. In the short term, as Italophile said, change the page break between TOC and your first page of your document you want page numbers to start on, to a Section Break (found on the Layout tab of the Ribbon) and then you can start a new header/footer. You could, for example, have any foreword and your table of contents be numbered ii and iii before starting with 1 through 10 in your main section. Best of luck, Ann |

Very well written article. Hopefully it still applies to Word 2019. (Will test it later) |

You will save yourself a lot of time and frustration by looking at these short tutorials.
If all you want is something simple, use WordPad. It comes with Windows. |

Yes. It applies to every version of Word from 2007 on. Some controls may be in different places and the current Layout tab was earlier called the Page Layout tab.

Awesome
Thanks for the rapid reply.
After much research I learned how to insert page breaks and begin page numbering on a different page. Problemm is, even though I unlinked the sections, the initial section the one that I wished not to be numbered, did have some. When I deleted them, the following section's numbers vanished I ht reverse (Ctrl+Z) and tried changing the initial section to a different format. The following (unlinked) section copied its style. Very confused... |

Have you looked at any of the other links I gave you? They will make it much easier for you to use Word. Go back to Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP. It is all in there. To better understand headers and footers, see Header/Footer Settings Recap. To better understand page numbers, see Page Numbers in Word 2007-2021 (365). |

Ack.
Yep. I went through and did what was explained Not sure where the error is coming from Operator probably Walked through "How to set up a document with front matter numbered separately..." Separated main document from front matter, inserted page numbering for the main document, and the first time it was blank with the numbers going into the front matter the next time it kept both sections numbered the same. Could be I have been at it too long and need a break..? |

Yes, it could be that you need a break, yourself.

Done! Thank you. Those instructions, as stated above, were just what I needed. Printed them out for future reference for next time I get temporary amnesia. Very appreciated. |
