Default Print or Print Preview changes all page numbers in the TOC are to 1

I have a rather long document and all looks OK until you print preview the document.
Once in preview all the TOC entries point to page 1.
Switching off the option to update field codes when saving and printing doesn't have any effect.
Removing the TOC and adding back in doesn't resolve the issue.

Any thoughts or advice most welcome.

Kenneth

Are the page numbers, on the pages, also 1?
What happens if you click in the TOC and press the F9 key?

Kenneth, maybe you've sorted it out by now?

I've only had this happen a few times when opening someone else's document, and it seems to have been a hiccup, as updating the TOC manually (right mouse click on top of any part of the TOC, Update Field) restored it. If that doesn't fix your issue, it sounds as though there may be a problem with how the page numbering was set up. Do you have a lot of sections?

My first step beyond refreshing the TOC would be to go to the first instance of a page number (presumably in the header or footer, delete the field and add a new one. Then going forward in your document, make sure the numbering is sequencing, especially if you go through section breaks where you might have to specify whether the numbers start over or continue from previous section.

Another thought: do you have any other custom multilevel lists in the same document, or associated with the style that the page number field is in? When you're in the header or footer in question, press SHIFT + F1 keys to get the Reveal Formatting side panel. You can see what, if any, formats/styles are on that page number in the document itself.

Finally, is your document in the latest format that your version of Word supports? You might try going to File/Info and seeing if it suggests you convert the doc into the latest version. Maybe give it a SaveAs under a new name before trying that. I have found it fixes some little bugs sometimes, but it can shift your margins and spacing a bit, so make sure you review thoroughly after converting. (For me, it wasn't in the doc itself, but when exporting a compatibility-mode .doc to an Acrobat PDF, the headers convert to bookmarks in the PDF until the last handful, which would just repeat the labels. After conversion to a current .docx, everything was fine.)

If you want to post an abbreviated version of your document with the TOC and a handful of pages, we can see what's going on. Otherwise, just guessing.

Ann
