Header Changing Position When I Restart Numbers
I'm writing a book and creating a chapter outline for it. I want to have numbered lists restart after each section. Sounds simple enough. Here's the problem:
Here's the setup before, showing a new section heading with the incorrectly numbered list (Attachment 1). I go to Right Mouse Button/Restart at 1 (Attachment 2). The heading moves half an inch over (Attachment 3)! I can't seem to find a way to get around this issue. Ideas? Thanks! Last edited by Andacar; 10-08-2022 at 03:01 PM. Reason: Wrong images |

Firstly, Heading 1 and Heading 2 'should' be part of the same Outline Numbered template with a setting that restarts the Level 2 (applied to Heading 2) numbers after a higher level. Then you wouldn't need to restart the list manually.
If these were being treated independently of each other then you need to look at the outline list settings to ensure that the indents are in agreement with the indents saved to the Heading 2 style. If the indent of the style is different to the indent of the outline list applied to that style you get the problem you are seeing with the manual restart. If you post a sample doc we can have a look at the style/list definitions and explain where the problem lies.

You may need a paragraph style in your numbering list above where you want to restart renumbering. It need not have a number, itself.
If you use automatic paragraph numbering or bullets read Shauna Kelly's directions on numbering and bullets. Start with How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010. For large documents you must follow these directions or you will lose your hair! (Mac version: Outline Numbering in Word for macOS - Best Practices - Brandwares) This may seem a bit convoluted at first, but it really is not. Just follow the steps. Shauna Kelly's instructions use the built-in heading styles, but you can use any existing paragraph styles including your custom styles. There are, however advantages to using the built-in heading styles when you create a Table of Contents. Here are some more advantages: Why Use Word's Built-In Heading Styles? by Shauna Kelly Note, you can modify these built-in styles to look exactly the way you want. Videos on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He_ob8ydc9E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbyTcWo52G4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GevZOS-nCuw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niD6VXPvAyU The basic idea is that the numbering is set using the Define MultiLevel List dialog with each numbering level being attached to an existing paragraph style. Once you have this set up, you should not use the buttons for numbering in the Ribbon but rather apply the appropriate style for that level. You can save a document with this as a template for future documents if you want so you will not need to do this every time. Attaching a sample document with the problem (rather than screenshots) can help. |
