Modifying the selection of icons available for QAT buttons
Word 2010 in Windows 10.
I would like to use different icons for items that I add to the QAT. The selection available (see attached image) is quite limited especially for macros. Where are these provided default icons stored? I would like to modify some of them. Is that possible? Thanks. |

I am guessing these aren't all sitting in a folder somewhere that you can edit. Even if they were it would be a problem if you were distributing this modification to other machines.
I would put custom buttons in the QAT by using a CustomUI Ribbon Editor. Have you done Ribbon edits before?

Thanks.
No I have never done ribbon edits. I'll look into finding a customUI ribbon editor. |

You cannot edit that display, as far as I know. However, it is possible to use other standard or custom icons, just not through the dialog.

If you are adding your own images, as pointed out by Greg, you need the Custom UI editor. Links to two free ones can be found on Customize the Office Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science) by Greg Maxey. I use the one from GitHub now. Like Greg, I keep most of my QAT modifications in one or more global templates and some in document templates. I do not store any in the CustomUI file that is the default. If you go down the rabbit hole of ribbon editing, the best book on the subject is RibbonX: Customizing the Office Ribbon by Robert Martin, Ken Puls, and Teresa Hennig. You may be able to download it from Ribbon X download. I really like the flexibility that ribbon editing using xml allows but it does have a learning curve. In either case, remember that, unlike vba, XML is case-sensitive. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 10-04-2022 at 05:10 PM. |

Thank you. That's very helpful advice. I really appreciate all the help. If it wasn't that word uses the same icon for all macros on the qat I wouldn't bother customizing.
In the meanwhile I discovered 'Classic Menus' which adds an extra tab on the ribbon with the old style Word menus. Very convenient because it gives me both the new and the old with a single tap. I'll soon not need it too as I learn my way around the. .... ribbon. |
