Thank you. That's very helpful advice. I really appreciate all the help. If it wasn't that word uses the same icon for all macros on the qat I wouldn't bother customizing.
In the meanwhile I discovered 'Classic Menus' which adds an extra tab on the ribbon with the old style Word menus. Very convenient because it gives me both the new and the old with a single tap. I'll soon not need it too as I learn my way around the. .... ribbon.
