I didn't. I recall writing it in Word, but it was some time back.

So Find and Replace is the best solution?

Zandareagle: Both Notepad and Notepad++ show that the weird characters are already in the text file before you import them into Word. So whatever tool/method you are using to create the text, the problem is not with Word - nor can it be solved by Word. I looked at all the encoding import filters I have in Word and none appeared to result in an import where your weird characters came in correctly.

I recommend you look at changing the tool you are creating the text in. Or perhaps the text file encoding format that the tool is saving the files in. Are you authoring on a Windows machine or something else?

Spillerbd: I've seen in a previous post where an author have complained that Word's responsiveness is slow and that they prefer to type into a text editor because they felt like they saw their typed characters appear on screen faster. In the absence of Zandareagle answering your question, that is my guess as to why they might have chosen this atypical approach to authoring.

I actually can't remember how I started the file, I believe it was in Word. It might have been a previous version, I changed computers recently.

Are there no solutions besides Find and Replace? I have been continuing the novel in Word.

I would say it needs to be a search and replace method to cleanse the file since you can't pinpoint where the problem has arisen from.

If the source was typed in English using a text editor then the characters MIGHT have been a datatype conversion issue but since you are getting hazy on the actual origin so just bite the bullet and do the find and replace. Its a one off effort if you are now authoring in Word.

Are there alternative encodings in other programs? I generally just use Word.

Thanks for all the help.

I tried copying your text into Notepad, correcting to what I presume are the missing bits of punctuation. Some apostrophes, some dashes, I think.

Whether I did an import into Word or just copied/pasted, I did get the blocks. I'm using Word 365 for Windows. I'm presuming Notepad's special characters aren't sympatico with Office's.

If you're using a device that doesn't have Office and are then transferring your text to use into Word, I suggest you use another text program. Perhaps Google Docs would work better, if you're inputting into your phone. WordPad, which came on my computer as did Notepad, copy/pastes with no loss of characters.

By the way, I picture babies as children too young to walk, so walking into a candy store would be surprising.

I'm quite certain I wrote in Word, but perhaps it was Notepad after all? Force of habit.

Anyway, one Find and Replace won't kill me. I generally use Word for everything else.

Candy store?

Candy store?
Your text file has "and they'd walked into it like babies into a candy store"

I was more interested in working out how many weapons Ash can hold in order to "shot a snarling demon in the face, and spun on his heel as his sword cut a blazing arc through the air"
followed by "he holstered his guns and brought up his swords fast enough"
then "the gun in his left hand taking out another rushing demon even as the right dove for his swords".
