What is this [ that appears in some headings?
Although I own more recent Word versions, I've always used Word 2002 because of my avoidance of the ribbon. Now, because Word 2002 is not compatible with Windows 10, I am forced to move on and I am learning to use the modern Word versions.
When I open in Word 2007 a very long "doc" document I created in Word 2002 it opens fine. But in some chapter headings, there is an extraneous grayed "[" (see attached screenshot, just before the 1). It does not appear in all chapter headings. Only on a few and I cannot delete it. What is it? What does it mean and how do I get rid of it? Thank you and sorry for the novice question. |

It looks like a bookmark. Does it print?
2007 is a poor upgrade choice. It was never very good. I would go with 2010 if not 365. |

Thank you.
No, it does not print. Can it be made to not appear? Thanks for the upgrade advice. My Office 2007 was purchased years ago. I will look for 2010. I may have purchased it too sometime in the past but not installed it. |

You can hide the bookmark indicators by going in to the Advanced Options. I can't recall what the name of the section is but it is usually about a third of the way down - keep scrolling in the advanced options until you find the setting to turn off.

You are correct. (of course)
Thank you both. (My browser does not show me where to click to thank you individually). I am using the "Quick Access toolbar" to add commands I frequently use until I become more familiar with the ribbon. |

The one caveat about hiding the visibility of the bracket is it may increase the likelihood that you'd accidentally backspace and delete it, so if you need it bookmarked, you might want to get used to seeing it. Ditto if you use fields; I opt in Advanced Settings to always show the gray on-screen (it doesn't print) so that I know it's a field and not to try to edit it.
I'm confident you'll grow to accept the ribbon. I still miss all my customized toolbars in old Excel, but just a little. Word, not so much. I've definitely been where you are - but given time and the QAT (I keep mine below the ribbon btw, makes more sense to me), you'll get there. Best, Ann |

Thank you Ann. I appreciate the support.
I will restore the bookmark non printing marks. I just wasn't sure what they were at first and if they implied some file corruption. Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I will also go to Office 2010 instead of 2007 which I read occasionally corrupts files. |
