Blank Template
Hi,
How do I make a blank template? The ultimate goal is to have a blank template which contains no extra styles, no additional fonts etc. From there I can add in what I want and use this for all documentation. I cannot find a way to remove unwanted styles, for which there are a great deal - I don't need '*** quote ***' or '*** title ***' or '*** TOC ***' or grid or table styles or anything like that. I don't need any fancy fonts either. Font's I appreciate are 'part' of the OS, but I don't need them in a word template. All this extra fluff is there for anyone who uses the template to go off on a tangent and create their own documents which are inconsistent with the company guidelines etc... All I need is a simple template where people can only use certain styles, fonts, tables etc. Thanks Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 08-13-2022 at 01:02 PM. |

All documents have access to hundreds of styles built into Word. You cannot change that.
You can Restrict Editing to a selection of Styles under the Developer Tab. You can also remove styles from the Home Tab. Here is a macro to do that: Code:
Sub StylesQuickStylesOff() ' Charles Kenyon 2018-12-03 ' ' This is preparatory to saving a Quick Style Set for only certain styles ' Strips all styles from quickstyles gallery ' ' Dim aStyle As Style On Error Resume Next For Each aStyle In ActiveDocument.Styles aStyle.QuickStyle = False Next aStyle On Error GoTo -1 End Sub Code:
Sub StylesDeleteUnusedStyles() ' Allen Wyatt ' https://word.tips.net/T001337_Removing_Unused_Styles.html ' Dim oStyle As Style ' For Each oStyle In ActiveDocument.Styles 'Only check out non-built-in styles If oStyle.BuiltIn = False Then With ActiveDocument.Content.Find .ClearFormatting .Style = oStyle.NameLocal .Execute FindText:="", Format:=True If .Found = False Then oStyle.Delete End With End If Next oStyle End Sub |

Thanks for this Charles,
One problem with Restricting Editing is that MultiLevel lists are also disabled - I cannot find a way to have restrictions and lists... |

Custom Styles are also Style+ styles such as when any manual formatting of text is applied instead of properly using a style. This will lead to many additional Custom styles being created by most users.
Personally I try to encourage collaborators to only use the Outline View. Then when the document is passed to the editor, they can do the editing and layout before finalizing the document. Beyond that, tell them to work in Notepad. Design. Style Sets. Themes. |
