Header is not displaying correctly
Hello,
I'm creating a template in Word and struggling with the headers. The header on the Table of Contents Page says: "My First Chapter 1", not "Table of Contents 1". Page 2, the header is correct, but pages 3 and 4 show the correct chapter but show "0" as the page number. I am using Microsoft 365. Thank you in advance! |

The StyleRef field in the header is set to pick up the text of Heading 1. The first instance of that style occurs on the third page.
The heading "Table of Contents" is in TOC Heading style so that it doesn't get included in the table contents. If you want that text to appear in the header you need to turn off link to previous in the section section, and change the StyleRef field in the header for the first section. Sections 3 and 4 have been set to have the page number start at zero. If that isn't what you want you need to change the settings. |

Hello!
I was able to fix pages 1-4, but The Table of Contents page still says "My First Chapter", Page "0". Ideally, I would like the header on the Table of Contents different from the rest of the document. I would like the header on the Table of Contents to say "Table of Contents" Page I, II, III, etc. Thank you for helping me get this far! |

The paragraph "Table of Contents" is likely in the TOC Heading style, not Heading 1 style.
Unless you want "Table of Contents" as a line in your Table of Contents, you want this. That means you could use a separate header for the section containing your Table of Contents. Take a look at Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP which discusses using a section break to distinguish front matter. Once you have such a section break, set your header/footer in the new section for the body of your document to not continue the header/footer from the previous section -- not linked to previous. Then change the header in the first section that contains your TOC. You do not need your TOC to be page 0. You can simply restart page numbering in the body section and not have page numbers in the section that contains your TOC. |

I appreciate your reply. I'm pretty good with Excel, but admit, I'm not so good with Word. I was able to get the document were I want it by reading and reading Suzanne's article. So, I think I'm ok for now. Thanks again!

You are welcome. When you have a bit of time, you should take a look at Basic Concepts of Microsoft Word - from Shauna Kelly.
