Default Problems with a style sheet

Hi. I have a style sheet set up for script writing the Style "Dialogue" jumps onto the next page if it will not fit on the first. page. I would like it split between the first and second page.

Also I tried to make a sample but when I changed the page numbering to start at 1, the page number 1 is invisible. It was an invisible page zero before. I know this is a separate problem but it is annoying.

Attached two pages.

TIA

Paul

A couple of things:

I think you can get nearer to what you want by using the "Keep with Next" function in your Styles.

I would suggest you change your "SLUGLINE_UL" style to include "Keep with Next" under paragraph settings. That will mean that line will not get orphaned at the bottom of a page but always stay with the ACTION section that follows it.

The same will be true of the Character style with the Dialogue style. You don't want STEWART to appear at the bottom of a page with his line of dialogue on the following one. By making those character styles "Keep with Next" that should help with this.

You don't have very long sections of dialogue. I experimented by repeating one line over and over, and it does split across to the next page.

As to the page numbering, in your header and footer settings, "Different First Page" is selected. That will mean the first page doesn't match the following ones. You can deselect that, but make sure you copy the footer you want on all pages first, and have on your clipboard. I think it should give you what you want, but just in case changing the footer settings would erase the one you wanted, you'd still have it on your clipboard to paste back in. I'm actually not clear on whether you wanted your first page to be zero, or one, or nothing. I'm in the US, and have never heard of the second page being page 1 unless it were a cover page of some sort. But, I also don't deal with scripts.

I think I agree with Ann.
The way you currently have this set up, there will be no page number in the first-page footer. If you uncheck "different first page" when in the header or footer, you will then have the number 1 on your first page.

I agree with her that styles are the key.

Set your ACTION and DIALOG styles to keep lines together but not keep with next.
Set your _SLUGLINE UL and CHARACTER styles to keep with next.
If you want your _SLUGLINE UL lines to always be at the top of a page, set them with paragraph formatting of Page Break Before.

Set your Character style to 12 pts. before. Get rid of the empty paragraphs.

I noted that you gave some thought to the style for following paragraph. I would suggest CHARACTER as the style to follow ACTION.

I've attached your sample document with all the recommended changes except the last one.

I have gone to _Slugline and Modify Style. I don't see any check box or Drop down for Keep with Next
AND: Set your ACTION and DIALOG styles to keep lines together but not keep with next. Don't understand this.

I am pretty limited on what I can do on Modify Style. Name, Style type, Based on, to follow

As for "I would suggest CHARACTER as the style to follow ACTION."
It doesn't always work that way for instance

STUART
(He jumps up)
What was that

STUART
Can I help you out?
(He gets up)

You can't guarantee what comes next every time.

As for different first page. I found out that you have to click on the footer to get the tab to show.

There are far more settings for a style than "Name, Style type, Based on, to follow"

See the attached screenshots

Still can not find keep with next or what is meant by
Set your ACTION and DIALOG styles to keep lines together but not keep with next.

In my supplied doc I found the Keep with next by format, Paragraph, Lines and page breaks.
I ticked Keep with next. I tried to get the line "Well she does come across a bit scary." to stay on the first page but it refuses.
I also have a window Orphan box ticked. Don't understand this.

Those options are clearly shown in the screenshots, which also show how you get to them.

Keep with next means keep this current paragraph on the same page as the start of the following paragraph.
Keep lines together means keep all lines in the current paragraph on the same page.

You want to be judicious in your use of these. If you have both set for every paragraph, you will get bizarre page breaks because Word can't keep an entire document on a single page. That is what setting both does.

See:
Did you take a look at the sample I attached?
Style for following paragraph will almost never be correct 100% of the time. When it is incorrect, apply the correct style yourself. If it is correct most of the time, it is a time saver.

The paragraph formatting dialog box has two tabs. Most of the things we have been discussing are on the second tab.

My scripts are between 30 and 45 pages long. I found that Keep with next and Keep together have problems where the only way Around it is to cut a line of dialogue of the next page and manually paste it onto the previous page.

I Have set all to keep together and have had to cut a line of dialogue from the next page and manually paste it onto the previous page. All in all though it looks better without large gaps at the ends of a page. I have to send these scripts to the BBC and I want them to be as good as I can.

Thanks.

Again, you want to use these judiciously. If every paragraph has both of these attributes, the result will be unpredictable and without purpose.
