Word 97, Make End Note Reference Interactive
When inserting EndNotes, sometimes one wishes to reference a previous existing Endnote. This can be done by Inserting a Cross-Reference to the EndNote.
HOWEVER: 1) that cross-reference (i.e. second + reference to the EndNote) is NOT interactive (i.e does NOT bring up the EndNote text when Cursoring Over that EndNote Number). AND 2) the cross-reference number is originally displayed as normal text NOT EndNote text (i.e superscript Font) and hence the cross-reference number has to be manually edited to show it as a superscript font). Is there a workaround ? |

2) You can apply the Endnote Reference style to the text. For (1) you could instead use a Hyperlink to the EndNote. That will allow you to add a screentip (which would not automatically update). After you add the hyperlink format it with the Endnote Reference style. This is an imperfect workaround. MS Reference on: Hyperlink field Pop-Up Text in Microsoft Word You could make that hyperlink more dynamic by incorporating cross-references for the display and pop-up text. That would be a complex field, not one you can just get from the fields or cross-reference dialogs. |

Mr. Kenyon:
Thanks for responding. Thanks for the ideas. Had tried making the EndNote hyperlink but that included the entire EndNote within the document where the EndNote was inserted within the text. Will play with the information at the links provided and see what works. David |

Just be aware that, if you use hyperlinks, the reference #s will not update if you add/delete any endnotes. If you really want to go down that path, see: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...aving-pdf.html

macropod:
Thanks for the additional input. Whether hyperlinks or Not, it appears Word will NOT allow one to insert the same footnote (endnote) at a second or greater location, and have the footnote / endnote be interactive by providing a popup textual narrative. Even just the insertion of another footnote / endnote with a previously used number, while doable as text and setting the Font as superscript, seems, IMHO, the long way around the block. |

Appreciate the macros and have saved for if/when I upgrade to a later Word version.
M$ killed the usage of Macros in Office 97 under Windows 10, and no known workaround I am aware of. FWIW, if one still has Windows 7, macros will work in that version. |

MS Office 97 has been incompatible with any Windows version since at least Win 7. Sure, you might have been able to get it to run macros, but merely installing it compromised the system security. You should consider upgrading to at least Office 2010 - legitimate 2nd-hand copies of which are available quite cheaply.
