zk12 is on a distinguished road
Default footnote keeps starting new line

hi, I have been having issues with my footnotes.

As you can see in the screenshot I have started typing a footnote but when I try to paste more text it automatically starts a new line.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Try pressing the ¶ symbol on the Ribbon's Home tab to display the document formatting - you may find that the content you're pasting includes paragraph breaks and/or line breaks.

The URL you are pasting is seen by Word as a single word and it tries to not break it. Try inserting a space after "government."

Except that it's not formatted as a hyperlink. Inserting a space would break it if it is meant to be used as a hyperlinked URL.

If this is a problem for zk12, it can be addressed. It can be made to work.

So why post a 'solution' that breaks a hyperlink instead of one that doesn't?

Paul,

I have not heard that a broken hyperlink is a problem for zk12. I try not to make assumptions. If it is a problem, create the hyperlink first, and then add the space which will then be in the display of the link but not in the result.

As I pointed out in post #4, we don't even know that it is a hyperlink. Until we hear back from the OP as to what pressing ¶ on the Ribbon's home tab reveals, it's pointless speculating.

So why call it a URL?

Simply inserting a space after "government", as you suggest would turn something that perhaps isn't a URL into a broken one - and could break an existing one. The correct way to insert a space in a displayed hyperlink is to edit the hyperlink display text and leave the underlying hyperlink alone.

Often, when writing I wan a hyperlink in the document that is not a link. I intend to publish as paper and do not want or need a link to go anywhere but to be visible. In Word, if there is a hyperlink field active, adding a space to the text can be done by simply typing the space in. This allows the hyperlink text to wrap without changing the destination.

If you want the link to be active, activate it before typing the space. If you do not want it to be active at all, add the space. If you have the default option on to convert to a link, press Ctrl+Z to undo the conversion to an active (inaccurate) link.

This shows four examples. The first is the hyperlink, pasted as text. The second shows what happens if you add the space before converting to an active link. The third shows conversion to an active link and the fourth shows the addition of the space to allow natural breaking of the line. The active link in the last two is identical but the text is different.

The document is attached.
