You'll need a new app to open this about link
Hi,
When clicking a hyperlink in word that points to a jpg file I get the following message I can open jpg files fine browsing via explorer. This behaviour does not happen in Excel when setting a hyperlink so its something Word related. I have...
Any more pointers would be appreciated. |

I just tried it and it worked okay for me. The hyperlink I created in Word was to a jpg on my own computer and it opened it fine using my default photo viewer Irfanview. Maybe it is a bug with the photos app you have? Or is the jpg location not on your computer? Maybe you are linking to an online jpg?
Try installing or using another photo viewer as your default to see if that fixes it. Irfanview is free and highly rated by those who test these things (and it works for me) but there are others as well. |

No, I am not linking to anything online. The Microsoft Photo app is almost certainly not the problem. All the files are local to my hard drive. I can open the jpg in a browser just fine. I can open the jpg in Microsoft Photos just fine. ??? Thanks! |

I went back to an old file where I did this. I know I was able to open a .jpg with a hyperlink from Word then. It does not work now.
I tried the wsreset.exe believing it did not apply to my problem. It had no affect. And just to be sure, I disabled my virus checker. No change. I still don't see a solution. |

Mmmmm. A difficult one. Sounds as if Word is mis-identifying the jpg link as another (unknown) file format that does not have an app associated with it. Very odd. Sounds like a new hyperlink related Word bug that wasn't present previously but why your Word is affected and not mine I don't know. Maybe a random bug that affects some and not others? Just guessing.
I know this isn't an immediate fix but it may get fixed in future updates. Good luck. Maybe some expert will help. |

Now I'm REALLY SCREWED!
I started a repair on Office. There was a download, then an install. Half way through the install, a popup appeared saying I was off line. I checked. I wasn't. Then the popup went away but the install NEVER continued. After waiting a long time, I closed the box, went back to apps and selected repair again. It spun for a second, then the green arrow check mark appears. But now all my Office apps are gone. I tried again, same thing. Desperate, I tried the reset option. Same check mark. Same thing. I am now downloading Office and will re-install. I'll let you know if this works. |

Well, after 2 hours on chats and the phone, and having to reinstall Word (plus the agent re-reinstalling again), I got Word back. (Why is it that tech agents just don't listen? They are trained to follow their steps in order, and they just don't care that you've just done those same steps.)
So, my apps are back. Yay! Hyperlinks to jpgs still don't work. BOO! One thing I did learn was the only changes to my system were Win10Pro updates on 5/1 and 5/8. Suspicious. Awfully suspicious. |

Maybe future updates will fix it. Best wishes.

Same problem with Word 365
I have the same problem, in Word 365. Originally, I noticed it with local .html files. Now I tried .jpg, and get the same error.
Other (or some other?) file types work as expected : .pdf, .txt. I also did a complete uninstall, reset the Default Apps to defaults, and re-installed office (with reboots between the different steps), but it didn't help. Some other machines have a similar problem, as described here: pdf - Word 365 hyperlinks open in wrong program - Super User. And some show "no program is registered to open this file" instead of "You'll need a new app to open this about link". But in all cases, all these files open fine and with the correct application when double-clicked in Windows. It's only the Office hyperlinks that don't work. |

It turns out it's a bug in recent updates of Office 365. See this for links and solutions:
