Cross-reference question about context

In Word 2016, I'm trying to cross-reference only 1(a); I am using full context, but getting I.1(a). Is there a way to exclude that roman I.?

I don't think there is a switch that can selectively choose the levels you want to show in the cross-reference.

The only way I can suggest is to put two separate xrefs (with no context) to the two paragraphs you want the referred numbers to come from.

"Paragraph number (full context)" means that all levels of numbering are included.

Try the "Paragraph number" option, which will insert a relative cross-reference, only including those levels that are required for a reader to identify the correct source.
