Default Multilevel list level 6 not restarting after level 5

All of the other levels in my multilevel list work fine, but for some reason I can't figure out, level 6 isn't restarting after level 5. The level 5 restarts after level 4, and all of the other levels restart fine.

I am attaching a screenshot of my level 6 set up. Am I missing something?

In the Link level to style field, change "Heading 6" to "(no style)"

Thank you, that works. But does this mean I can't link level 6 to a style? I will have to select the multilevel list level 6 every time?

EDIT: Sorry, I just did some more experimenting and it only works the first time I do it. When I continue with the document and change the list level to 6 for subsequent text, it doesn't restart.

This was poor advice. You want each level attached to a separate paragraph style.
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly

I suspect, but do not know, that you have more than one list in your document.
Consider attaching a sample document file (not screenshot) with the problem.

Yes, I have 6 list levels attached to Heading 1 to Heading 6. I also have other lists (bulleted) lists as well. All of the other lists I have work fine except for this one so I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have attached a sample of my document.

The screenshot provided showed only one heading style linked to a level, hence my "poor advice" to remove it. If the screenshot had shown links to multiple heading styles, I would have provided other advice.

The sample file has 21 multilevel list styles in it (determined via macro).

It is very easy to continually and unwittingly create new multilevel list styles by clicking Define New Multilevel List. These are then not accessible via the Multilevel List button. They live in the file, unnamed, they accumulate, and you can't search for where they're applied.

(In addition, in the List Library, Word shows multilevel list styles from other open files, which can add confusion.)

What I would do is create a new, NAMED multilevel list style, set up the levels/headings to work as needed, then always use that named list style, and never use Define New Multilevel List when modifications to the list style are needed; instead, only modify the named style directly.

When you have a named list style, it will appear via the Multilevel List button in a section called List Styles, below the List Library thumbnails. Modify a named list style by right-clicking > Modify.

I went to the first numbered item, at level 1 and used the Define New MultiLevel List dialog.

In that list, Heading 6 was NOT attached to your level 6. I added it to that.
It fixed the problem.

Peterson's analysis of the number of lists in your document does not surprise me. I support the idea of naming your list.

My macro, in the revised document, shows 1 list and 22 list templates.
Code:
Sub NumberOfLists()
    ' Charles Kenyon  16 April 2022
    MsgBox ActiveDocument.Lists.Count, title:="List Count"
    MsgBox ActiveDocument.ListTemplates.Count, title:="List Template Count"
End Sub
In a new blank document, the same macro shows 0 lists and 0 list templates.
In your originally posted document it showed 2 lists and 22 list templates.

Thank you both so much. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure this all out. I inherited the document from someone else, and lists and multilevel lists totally confuse me at times.

I truly appreciate your input and help! Thank you!

Hi, Charles. I am delighted to find this list-counting macro, a handy check when dealing as I do with proposal documents that not infrequently get inadvertent additions from writers cutting and pasting willy-nilly.

Will you please point me to an explanation of the list template? It's not clear to me what this second number represents.

Thank you.

ActiveDocument.Lists.Count is the number of lists that are present (applied to text) in the current document, while ActiveDocument.ListTemplates.Count is the number of number/bullet formats stored in the current document.
