Maybe you have a two-column table? Some vertical borders may be hidden to create the illusion of a single column (with two different text alignment settings).
On the Home tab in Word, click the ¶ icon to display nonprinting marks. Each table cell will be terminated with an end-of-cell marker (¤). (You will also see the ¤ symbol at the end of each table row.) What do you see in your table?
