Footnotes in columns - will not adjust
Hi friends!
I am trying to layout a Word doc which is columns "on top" and one column on the bottom (the footnotes). I format the text as 2 columns and then add my footnotes. Right-click the footnote text, choose "note options" choose (under footnote layout) 1 column. (on whole document) and the footnotes stay in 2 columns! What's goin on?? Thank You very much! Susan PS I see that if I start from a totally empty doc and add text and than do the above it works. So why cannot I format an already doc as such....??? |

If you have a recent version of Word and the document is saved in *.docx format, you can choose a one column layout for the footnotes while maintaining two columns for the main body of the document.
Older versions do not support that. If the document body contains three columns, for example, you get three columns of footnotes.

Thank You
Yes this was indeed the problem. Word is amtureing, but soooo slowly.
I wonder if I will live to see in-line footnotes. i.e.: 1. fdkfjdfjdlj 2. dfjkljfkdlsjfksl 3. jvkcxjkljvkl and NOT 1. jdhfjdkhdjk 2. fhjfhdjfhdk 3. hfdjhfjdkhf In any case, thank you for the help!! Susan |

I don't remember exactly which version introduced the multi-column footnote layout.
If you are still using Word 2013, which your profile says, then maybe you don't have that option. You are correct, though, that no version supports displaying multiple footnotes in the same text paragraph. You can format the paragraph marks between footnotes as hidden, but doing so won't save any vertical space in the footnote area.

I got a new PC that came with Office 2019 and was so presently surprised to see that they enabled this (one column FN for 2 column text). I mean, I have been waiting for it for almost 30 years....

Yeah, as I wrote initially, recent versions support having, for example, a three-column layout in the footnote area while maintaining a single column layout for the main body.
