Default why HYPERLINK and EMBED Equation.3 in word docs?

I started using MS Equation about a month ago to add math equations to lesson plans I was making with Word. It was working well but then for some reason all the equations in the Word documents I'd made and now make show,EMBED Equation.3, instead of the equations. I've also noticed that all links that are part of a document that I copy and paste are proceeded with HYPERLINK. Interestingly, when I view the docs in print preview, everything looks normal. Can someone give me a clue about what I've done wrong. Thanks!
