Default How to have columns in word 2016.

Hi. This is not such an easy question. I want two columbs but I want the left one to be a narrow one. I don't want the document divided in half.

TIA

Desmond.

You could use a two column borderless table with the column widths as required.

Thumbs up

Thanks. I saw this as an idea, but having to add row after row, I thought there might have been a simpler way.

One problem with this is auto numbering like you get in excel.

You don't need lots of rows. You could have just one row spanning several pages.
What is your problem with auto-numbering? You can have numbered paragraphs.

Under the choice for Columns, number of Columns, do you not have either LEFT, RIGHT or MORE COLUMNS?

The Columns feature in Word gives you newspaper (snaking) type columns. Is that what you want? If so, you can adjust the width in the Ruler, making one smaller and one larger as well as adjusting the space between.
Like Graham, I expect that you really probably want a table.

gmayor You don't need lots of rows?

I said that I had lotts of rows. I do want lots of rows. In script writting you use what is known as Step outlines.
This can be up to 50 rows. I want to number these rows as ideas.

Charles Kenyon. I can not adjust the size of the columbs to make one smaller. All this does is make both smaller.

Numbering columbs may be a way but don't know about this.

I am attaching 2 docs. One shows that you can't shrink a split. The other is what I need numbered.

I still think you want a table. However:

Ahh, that type of Script writing. Either method available in Word has drawbacks. For a Script, which has Action in one column and dialogue in the other, there is no real feature function that works great. The different objects available, Text Boxes and Tables, do not span pages.
Using Columns has the disadvantage of requiring extensive use of manual column breaks and page breaks. If you have an extensive edit/insert that changes your breaking, it could be a nightmare of an edit depending how early and big it is in the document.

This style of document, Scripts, makes Scrivener a likely replacmement for Word in this case.

No you don't understand script writing. There are 3 stages. a one page outlin, a step outline about what hapens in each scene, and then the actual script it'self.

This is a proper sample. Now what want is a columb to the left of this with a numbering system.

gmayor said "You can have numbered paragraphs." What is this?

I'm sure you want more than a numbering of each line as in this version of your sample.
