Default First page footer section vs. Footer section

Hi. Related to my previous posts, I thought I got everything going with page numbering but I got stuck since yesterday about an issue that I could not find a solution to.
First page footer section 9 is page 29, the next page of the same section should be 30 but the page appearing was 4.
Link to previous was checked.
I would like help in pointing out the cause of the different section footer.
From "First page footer section", it became plain "footer section" in the succeeding page. And in this "Footer section" the page number was 4 instead of 30.
Thank you.

Hi Marcia,

I'm sorry but I do not understand "footer section." This is due to my immersion in Word jargon, I guess.

A Section is a part of a Word document that ends in a Section break or mark. In a document with one Section, that mark is the last paragraph mark in the document.

Each Section has three footers, the main footer, the first-page footer and the even-page footer. These may or may not all be displayed.
A Section can be in the middle of a page, thus showing no footers.
Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word (Ribbon Versions)
A Section has footers. A footer does not have Sections.

Here is a link to an Add-In to produce continuous page numbering in a document.

A footer occupies space on a page. Is that what you mean by footer section?

I was supposed to attach the image (it's blurry)of the header and footer of the document I'm working on.
The "First Page Footer Section 9" has page 29. In the next page, the header/footer says "Footer Section 9". The page number of this page should be 30, but the number is 4. I checked the Link to Previous.
What causes the "Footer Section 9" to shift from "First Page Footer Section 9?"
The document is 113 pages long. The pages with "First Page Footer Section..." give the correct pages but in between them are pages with "Footer Section...." and these pages break the correct page numbering.

Marcia
We can't see the page number field codes but the answer will probably lie there. So toggle the field codes and verify that the field code in the S9 first page footer is the same field code as the S9 footer.

There is a reasonable chance that one of these is actually typed text instead of a field.

I finally straightened the broken page numbers by starting from the last page going up, linking all pages to previous until I reached the TOC page.
I could not open the links you provided Charles.

Restart options for page numbers are set per section. Use the Page Number Format dialog box (Insert tab > Header & Footer group > Page Number > Format Page Number).

See also Numbering Front Matter (Ribbon).
