Word 97, Using Ruler to Move Blocks of Text Messes Up Formatting

I wonder if I'm doing anything Wrong, and if so what is the solution.

In constructing my document I have a number of multiple indented paragraphs.
For example

Code:

A.  now is the time
     A.1   for all good men
     A.2   to come to 

             A.2.1 the aid of 

             A.2.2 party

In between those paragraphs I may have a quote that is indented.
Now if I mark and block, say A.2 and move it left using the ruler indents,
the formatting MAY not remain and I have to gp back and manually redo the indents.

Indents in Multilevel lists are controlled in the Define New MultiLevel List dialog. See Shauna's page for directions on setting up the numbering.

Here is my chapter on Numbering in Microsoft Word , but Shauna's page is more important for you now.
