Suspected bug in Word Pro Plus 2019 - scrambled display
A couple of times within the last 2 weeks the display went crazy whilst editing documents in Word. By 'crazy' I mean that random symbols would appear where icons should be. e.g. Where the 'X' should be at top right there were random symbols of the type that one might insert into the document itself by selecting 'Insert' then 'Symbol'. Similary all along the ribbon. I was forced to close Word and load it again and it was OK again although I lost my changes.
The second time I thought I would check to see if any Office updates were available that might fix the issue and I saw a message "Updates are ready to install" so I installed them. This was about two days ago and it's been okay since then. This might have applied to Office 2019 per se but I was working in Word at the time so don't know if it happens with Excel and other apps. Is this a bug in Office? Has anyone else had this experience? It can't be something I did to affect the user interface like that. |

Before I get into troubleshooting, I should address the nature of your license. An Office "Professional Plus" license is a volume license not authorized for distribution to individuals except through the home use program through employers. Such licenses are often sold by unscrupulous internet vendors. They will work when installed, but when Microsoft looks at the number and location of the installations in violation of the license agreement, they cancel the authorization.
I sincerely hope this is not your situation. If it is, your only recourse is through the vendor who sold you this void license. Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office. If the 32-bit version, consider switching to the 64-bit version. Can you use the option to disable hardware graphics Acceleration? This needs to be done in PowerPoint or Excel since the option was removed from Word for some reason. It applies to all of Office, though. |

Thanks re the license advice. I wasn't aware of this since Office was a birthday present from someone else and I don't know the source. I would not have posted the photo if I had known. I will consider whether to uninstall it soon or allow it to run until MS deactivate it.
I may install Libre Office alongside MS Office so that I will be able to get used to it first just in case MS deactivate it. My MS Office is 32-bit, which I think I am best staying with rather than potentially cause problems by trying to change it to 64-bit. After your advice I do not want unnecessary communications with MS servers. I'll also try disabling hardware acceleration if it should happen again. Thank you again. I am not suggesting uninstalling, it may be that your copy is legit. Just be prepared that at some point Microsoft may disable it.

I have installed LibreOffice. It doesn't seem too different to MS Office although I know it is not 100% compatible. This is OK because I am retired and not sharing documents. I can cope with that.
I feel easier now that I know I have a fallback option. |
