Default Word 97, Insert Custom Header Footer

I've just done simple things with Word in the past.
I now need to prepare a legal document.
Microsoft has disabled MACROs so a template does Not work.

----------

Questions
----------
1) Is a Footer the same as a Footnote?
2) I need to put a line with Case Number ___________ in
upper right corner. I assume this would be a Header.
I found Insert > Autotext BUT nothing to designate and position a Header.
HOW ?

3) I need a page number (preferably 1 of __) on bottom

and in addition would like a line on the left with the document name
for my tracking. Insert menu has Insert > Footnote but no Insert Footer.
HOW ?

Thank you for your time.

  1. Disabling macros has nothing to do with the ability to use templates. You want to be using templates. Templates in Microsoft Word
  2. Page Numbers in Word 97-2003
  3. FileName field
  4. Basic concepts of Microsoft Word: An introduction by Shauna Kelly, MVP
  5. Footnotes and Footers are very different things even though both are at the bottom of a page. Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 97-2003

For headers and footers look under the view menu.

Mr. Kenyon:
Thank you for your time on my behalf.
Will peruse each link.
Your correct, Headers, Footers in View in 97,

Based on this post, I tried Headers and Footers.
Headers worked fine and were hidden after entry until I went to Print Preview.
Footers on the other hand, a box came up, and after being in the box and selecting page number (which appeared in box) upon closing hid itself. HOWEVER, in checking for Footer in Print Preview, nothing showed. So I'm guessing Page numbers are INDEPENDENT from footers and need to be outside the footer box.
Just mention this as have yet to read your links so they may have the solution.

In read to Templates and MACROS, I do know for a fact Microsoft shut them off and they are NOT available in 97 and for quite a lot of version after that as there is no "Trust" available to enable them. MIcrosoft also disabled HELP at around the same time -- anything with HLP extension -- and selecting Help throws one to a MS website that says in effect "not available". I tried several work arounds, but Win10 undoes them frequently. I did download a template from the Net for usage and it had MACROS and would not run. One could look at the VBA code, but will not execute.

1. Macros continue to run in a properly installed version of Word 97 AFAIK. I have not used it for more than four years, though.
2. Macros and templates are completely different concepts. Templates can contain macros; so can documents. You can use templates with or without macros.

Word 97 had real flaws that were mostly fixed in Word 2003.

I agree.

They used to UNTIL Win-10. This includes ALL of Office including Excel.
I've tried several tweaks to get them to work, but because M$ has now linked them with TRUST, they do NOT work. I've even looked for a Registry solution.
HOWEVER, if you know of a workaround that works, PLEASE ADVISE, and I owe you BIG TIME!

@dw, You may be able to use Libre Office (fka OpenOffice)
It has support for MS VBA, though it is not complete.
It is quality freeware and supports most the same functionality as Word. There are a few function in Word that I would miss but I often find most don't use or know.

Thanks for responding.
Regarding Macros Not Working, the KB referenced IMHO has nothing to do with it,
Microsoft deprecated the HLP files for CHM and at the same time for security reasons stopped Macro Usage UNLESS you have Trust in their newer products. I'm sure a lot of this was marketing to force older users like myself to upgrade (e.g. Office Products).

Here's the best link I found to the KB you mention for others, if needed.
Windows update causes Office VBA to fail - Office Watch

Thanks for mentioning Libre Office.

I'm NOT a heavy user of Word, just few docs here and there until now, so Libre may be an alternative sometime in the future, but I imagine an All new GUI interface.
