Hi. I used to have text boxes in word 2007. I could add text inside. What I want to do now (Word 2016) is to have more of an oval shape with text inside it.




I have used Insert -> Shape but can not convert to have text inside it. I can insert a text box but it is an squre box.


Can i have more fancy shapes with text.

Try double-clicking in the Oval and typing.

No double clicking on the shape does not do anything. Here are a few more problems.


1) If I hi-light a text box (which I am using at the moment) A symbol to the right allows me to change surrounding text actions. If I select multipul boxes (Shift + click) I do not get that icon. Therefor can not mult select text boxes and change the outside text behaviour.


2) I have added text around some boxes but they are grey. I can not selcet them and change font colour.


I am attaching the document. Page 2 has the shape. The reson for all of this is to outline a stage comedy and each text box or shape is a moment in the play.

To add to what Graham has said, you may have to change the text color (depending on the selected theme); otherwise, text may appear white on a bright background which means that it can't be read.

Okay thanks. I have been used to converting a box to text. Can you answere the 2 questions I also asked for. Mulitpul selections and changing the way they work with surounding text and outside text can't be seen because they are grey.


On the bottom right 2 boxes up [Intermediate required scene].
Above there is the number (15). I can not change it to red bold.

1. When you have selected multiple shapes, you can change their settings on the Shape Format tab on the ribbon.

2. To modify the text, you will have to select the text (not the shapes themselves).

2) I am highlighting ONLY the text not all the shapes and the entire document.

If you are saying that you have selected all the text in the main body of the document with Ctrl+A, note that this doesn't include text inside shapes or text boxes.

Technical following up on Stefan's advice: Text boxes are in a different "story" from ordinary text in a document. Selecting all does not include the text contents of text boxes.

You have to select text inside the text box using the mouse/touchpad.

Indeed, story ranges are kept separate.

In fact, with the insertion point inside a text box (or inside the text of a shape), you can press Ctrl+A to select all the text within that box, if you want. :-)

No you are not understanding plain english. As you will see from my upload. There is text that is TOTALY OUTSIDER of any box.


Without being totaly sarcastic. Get a magnidfying glass on my upload.


You will see (Abnd you may need glasses for this), some text at the bottom of the first page. This is samdwiched between two microsoft text boxes

Can you see the text (15) in grey. Tell me if you can't

Double clicking in the blue oval lets me type just fine.

What about the (15) or the XXX?


You were saying you could not type in a shape. I certainly can. Since the color is automatic, it shows up white on the blue background.

This problem still exsists and nobady has any answers to it. They claim I am refering to the text within a shape or text bosx when it clearly states this text is outside the shapes and text boxes.


(15) is grey and will always be grey, unless someone has a solution to this.
