Default How to make scroll bar permanently visible, Word 365

Hello everyone

I usually use Word 2003, but ocassionally I need to use Word 365 (on the same computer). I compare long documents against each other visually. In Word 365, the scroll bar disappears when the mouse is not over Word, and the scroll bar is hidden when the Word window does not have the focus. This disappearance act serves no functional purpose, so I'm not sure why Microsoft chose to implement it. Word 2003 doesn't have this problem.

This is an issue because it means I can't see my relative position in a file unless I click inside the window, which is a bit of a productivity killer.

Do you know of a way to force Word to always show the scroll bar, even if the mouse is not over the window and even if the window does not have the focus? Even a registry fix would be welcome :-)

Thanks
Samuel

I'm not familiar with Word 365 but in Word 2019 the vertical scroll bar can be enabled: -

Thanks. Word 365 is the subscription-based Word that gets you all the latest updates, so it's the same as the most recent version. Enabling the scrollbar like in your screenshot does not help, unfortunately -- the scrollbar still disappears as soon as I move my mouse away from the window or click in another window. Does the scrollbar stay, for you?

How to make scroll bar permanently visible, Word 365?

AFAIK the scroll bars will fade out when no 'activity' is detected after a predetermined time. This is by design.
If you are comparing different documents side by side, try clicking above the 'Ribbon' to say re-focus the cursor at its last 'blinking' position and to re-show (un-hide) the scroll bars.

Yes, I was afraid of that. It is "by design", though I can still dream of a registry fix. Office is the only program on my computer that does this, though. Is this a common feature in some other modern programs?

Curiously (and fortunately), I can still use the scroll wheel of my mouse even on the Word window that doesn't have the focus, but then I have no idea where I am in the document because I can't see the scroll bar.

Yes, scroll bars stay in place for my Office 2019 but only if part of the page is off-screen due to %ge magnification or there is more than one page. If there is only one page and I zoom out to see the whole page then the scroll bars vanish but this will not happen if there is more than one page. This is logical because if I can see the whole page then no scrolling is needed.

You clearly didn't follow.

This option disables the vertical bar completely. When it's enabled, it appears when you move the cursor to the right edge, and disappears in a few seconds. I want to make it visible all the time.

One workaround which has nothing to do with the scroll bar but which might help is to use the Navigation Pane (which then takes up a bunch of screen space).
Using the Navigation Pane
This would require use of outline headings. That can help give you an idea of your relative position in the document and is not dependent on the document having the Windows focus.

Well, I've found the working solution.

Go to view > read mode.
When in read mode go to view > layout > paper layout. The scrollbar appears.
Press esc to exit the read mode. The scrollbar stays and never disappears since then.

I'm glad it works for you. It does not work here with Word 365.

Doesn't matter to me because I seldom use anything other than the full window for Word documents.
