default Save location?
I find it HUGELY annoying that Word always wants to save in the last place it saved, which can be a deeply buried folder that has absolutely nothing to do with what you're working on. Is there any way to set a default file save location? Desktop would be fine by me.

Desktop is a horrible place for a default save.
Word > Preferences Should lead you to a default file locations dialog. |

Within a session of Word it will default to the 'last saved' location but if you have only just opened the application, the default save location will be in play.
Since this is a problem for you, perhaps it is worth you having a look at Graham Mayor's addin Select Folder and Save which will give you an industrial-strength solution to your default save location. Edit: Hmm, I see you are on a Mac. I'm not aware of whether Graham's addin works on a Mac but it is possible so still worth a look.

Your horror isn't mine Word>Preferences leads me to a File Locations pane, which allows me to select file locations for (1) Images (2) User Templates (3) AutoRecover files (4) Tools and (5) Startup. Not clear how any of those help in determining where documents get saved. |

I am not on a Mac. Under Word > Preferences... Is there a Save dialog? Or General? This is what we are looking at in the Windows version... Quote:

As I said, my File Locations doesn't do it. My Save and General don't do it either. I'd like to post images of those, but the stupid forum keeps telling me that each of these 30K jpg pictures have too many characters. I sure wish I was offered the options that you see on your system.

I understand that pain.
In Windows, I generally either create a blank Word Document in the folder using the Right Mouse click or immediately save the new document to the desired folder. While my default location is okay, I much prefer having separate folders for a project with appropriate related files. I can move the files later, but that means cleaning up the recent-files links. |
