Hi Folks,
Word 2007 seems to have a problem with setting tabs within certain styles, especially the TOC styles. If one right-clicks on a TOC style, say TOC2, and chooses "Modify | Format | Paragraph | Tabs...", the tabs listed in the resulting dialog box don't always match the tabs that are actually in the style. This makes it impossible to update the TOC2 style correctly. For example, in a template I'm working on, I set a tab at 1" for the TOC2 style but later decided to change the tab to 1.2". When I access the tab dialog box as described above, however, the 1" tab does not appear, even though it appears in the TOC wherever the style TOC2 appears. I then enter the 1.2" tab into the dialog. At that point, both the 1" tab and the 1.2" tab will be programmed into the style (every time I create a new TOC they both appear), but only the 1.2" tab shows up in the tab dialog box. Of course, the 1" tab can be eliminated by hand from each instance of the TOC2 style in the TOC, but this is a manual operation that would have to be done each time the TOC is fully updated. Because the 1" tab doesn't show up in the dialog, there is no way to eliminate it from the TOC2 style itself. It thus reappears every time the Table of Contents is updated. This disconnect between the tabs that are actually in the style and the tabs that show up in the "Tabs..." dialog makes it impossible to correctly manage the style. Word 2007 had an even worse bug with the Tab dialog before SP2 came out, but apparently it was fixed by SP2. This bug, however, remains. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a solution to this behavior? Thanks, and best.... Charles S. |
