Default many redundant toc bookmarks in doc

(Word/Office 2019) I have a doc with a single TOC and some cross refs. Nothing fancy.
Somehow some of the headings have multiple toc bookmarks.
Ordinarily I might not worry, but they show up in the publishing medium I'm using. (ServiceNow knowledge base, pasting into an article)
And the dumb bookmarks are displayed in front of the heading texst.
If only one or two, this would be annoying but not critical.
But some of them have 3-6 markers.
If I use the bookmark dialog and just kill all the toc bookmarks, will Word just regenerate the ones I need when I update the TOC?
Any thoughts or comments?
Thanks

Jay
