I recently learned about the selection pane of word and checked my document for all the objects that are listed there. Some of the objects listed I cannot select though, they are greyed-out.



Any suggestion on how to proceed with these?

They may be in a header or footer.
For future reference, please either crop or resize your image. Large images scroll not only the image, but the text of your post off the screen, making it harder to read.

I checked the header and footer.
There are no objects present in either and the selection pane also does not display any.

I figured that the two greyed-out objects shown in the picture above will vanish if I select and delete "Abbildung 4". Oddly enough though, now there are four of these greyed-out objects.

On another page with two figures and one greyed-out object, the object will vanish if I delete any of the two figures.

I don't know why some of these shapes are unselectable but we might be able to work it out by deduction. Do you have document protection or tracked changes in your document?

It would be easier to figure out if we could see a sample document

Yes, I did use tracked changes and then merged to versions of the document a few months ago. Deadly combination I will never do again. I took me more time to fix all the problems than it saved time checking all changed text.

In those two grouped graphics, you have several MathType objects sitting in the text fields. If you cut those out you will discover you are removing the greyed out objects.

I surmise this is either because they are MathType objects OR they are shapes embedded inside a text frame.

Must be because they are embedded inside a text frame as I have many more MathType objects that I can select from the selection pane.

Nothing I want to or can change about this.
