Default Typing the wrong Apostrophe

Hello all and thanks for the forum.

My issue is the following:

When using an apostrophe to shorten a word--or a number/year--the first click on the apostrophe (quotation key) curves to the right rather than, correctly, to the left.

You can't see it as typed here, you just get a straight line basically, i.e. '90s. But I can paste it in from a Word doc:

This-- ‘bout

Vs.-- ’bout

Any way around having to type the quote mark twice and go back and delete the redundant one--many times?

You can press Ctrl+Z to undo the curly apostrophe and change it to a straight one.

Word is set to angle any that is at the start of a word to the right, and at the end of a word to the left. You can copy and paste a left-angled one if you wish.

I suppose using Ctrl-Z to straighten the wrongly-angled quote mark could be a solution but one, it also wastes typing time and two, the angled mark looks much better on the page (rather than the straight one you get).

There must be a way to get it without jumping through backspace/delete/copy/paste hoops.

You can key in the ascii code directly by holding the Alt key down and pressing 0146

You can also use the Insert Symbol function at Insert > Symbol > More Symbols > Special Characters and pick it from the list. That interface shows me a keyboard shortcut that doesn't work for me but you might have more luck with it. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut or autocorrect in this dialog.

That's a good solution, to use the Symbols. And I've created my own shortcuts for them.

Thanks, Charles and Guessed.
