Is there any such thing as a "relative space in Word?

The header of my DOC is setup like this

FIRSTWRDOFHEADER[10 spaces]CHAPTERNAME[10 spaces]SECONDWRDOFHEADER

The "chaptername" is getting its text from a field styleref("chaptername")

But sometimes the chaptername text is long enough to cause the SECONWRDOFHEADER to get pushed to the next line.

Is there a way to put a "dynamic" space in the header which will adjust its size so the text will always be on the same line?

Use tabs rather than the space bar. The Header style has built-in tab settings for center and right tabs. Working with Tabs

You can also use Alignment Tabs.

Use tab stops, as Charles suggested, or possibly a three-column table, in the header.
