Word Placed a 1. in forn ton the horizontal line above footnotes
Hello,
I have a document that I have been working on for a while. It has many footnotes. I started out normal and now in front of the horizontal line above the footnotes put a 1. like this 1. _______________ 54 Ibid., para 300. I tried all I know and chatted with MS help for 2 hours today. They finally reloaded the program and gave up. I start a new document and it is fine. I cut and paste to a new document and the issue remains. The pull down for footnote and endnote show a custom mark of 1. I can erase this but it will not let me apply. Windows 10 and MS 365. Thanks in advance. |

It sounds like you need to view the footnote separator to check its content and formatting.
It can be edited by switching to Draft View then clicking on References|Show Notes. You then select 'Footnote Separator' from the Footnotes dropdown in the window. There is a Reset button that might fix it. Otherwise perhaps see if there is an auto-number paragraph attribute applied to it.

Problem solved
Thank you Guessed. The footnote seperator had the 1. in front of it. I deleted it and the offending digit went away !!!
