Office 2018. Hi I have tried everything to stop this




Office proofing -> [Auto coorect options button


I have unticked Hypens with dash on both Auto format tab and

Auto format as you type.


Why have 2 Autoformat tabs?


This has not helped.

Workaround: - I too found this annoying so now I type dots instead of hyphens.

It seems unusual at first but I have got used to it now. It's easy as well. Just keep your finger pressed on the dot key for as long as needed.

I discovered how to stop it happening: -

Untick 'Border lines' in AutoCorrect. See photo.

There is no Border lines' in AutoCorrect. I am using Office 2018 and I have found the same information online.

Here is Office 2018. No Borderline on auto correct.

There seems to be 2 Auto corrects. The as you type does have border lines. This is a strange name for this action.


Works now.

The inserted lines are in fact paragraph borders (look in the Borders and Shading dialog box). That is why the AutoFormat As You Type option mentions borders.

The difference between AutoFormat and AutoFormat As You Type is as follows: AutoFormat is a command you can run to "fix" the formatting in a document with pasted content. (You can add AutoFormat to the Quick Access Toolbar in recent versions of Word.)

AutoFormat As You Type, on the other hand, occurs during typing, without user intervention.

You want the one for AutoFormat as you Type.
