I agree, it was a simple solution but a very non-obvious one. I looked at all sorts of settings to try to figure out why the two files were different. I was definitely clutching at straws when I decided to try changing formats.

I have no idea why file compatibility is relevant to the trailing space on a footnote but at least we have a fix for it now.
