Default Word has 'disappeared' from my PC

Hi all, I feel very cheeky coming on here to beg for help but I feel I'm getting nowhere via other avenues.

I use word a lot-I'm a counsellor and all my client's notes are in word, I write (guess what program I use for that) I also use excel a lot for various things.

Yesterday I received a quite important email with a lot of word attachments in it.

None of which would open.

Luckily (!) my computer programmer friend was visiting and he told me to download 'Word Viewer' as this would likely fix the problem.

Well, still none of the attachments would open.

I then tried to open an old word file containing notes for some of my writing and I got an error message and a large orange pop up saying 'Updating Office, Please wait a moment'. It still does this as I speak at 0400 almost 24 hours later.

The error message reads something simple like 'The application was unable to start correctly, please click okay to close application'.

i have tried opening word first from the start menu, same thing. Word still comes up if I type it into start, with option to open.

If I LOOK for word, office or similar in my apps however, it isn't there.

Another friend who knows about computer-related things said;

'Right Click start, goto run
type in Control
hit Enter
Click uninstall a program
Scroll till you find it
Click either repair or change and repair.'

This doesn't work as the program isn't in this menu either.

What can I do?My computer programmer friend says 'You mustn't have had word already' But I did!All my documents are written using word.

My Mum has said to download office 365-would this work? I am scared of losing all my documents in the process and all my client's notes which are essential for me, and hours of work has gone into much of them.
Any help will be so so appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

You write: - "My computer programmer friend says 'You mustn't have had word already' But I did! All my documents are written using word."
I ask: - Were all these documents written on the very same computer where your friend says 'You mustn't have had word already'? Maybe you had Word on another computer and wrote the documents on that machine but have forgotten?

The only other answer is that you have accidentally uninstalled Word. If you have the original Office 2010 CD and key then reinstall it.

Office 365 is a monthly subscription model of Office so be prepared to pay.

A free compatible option is to install LibreOffice and set it up to save in docx format. See Home | LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Based on OpenOffice - Compatible with Microsoft

Good luck.

Default Hi Ken

Yes, it is this computer I work from (or did!) almost every day.

Could I have uninstalled word by downloading this 'viewer' thing? I definitely haven't actively uninstalled it. So odd.

It is unlikely to have been uninstalled without an explicit action by you but installing a viewer may have changed the file association which sets the application which is used when you double-click a file to open it.

First step is to do a search for the application. If you press the Window key and type "Word", does the application appear in the list of Apps? If not, open Windows File Explorer and do a search on C:\ drive for "winword.exe"

You can use Office 365 with your files. If you are signing up for the free trial, be sure to discontinue it before you get charged if you do not want to keep it.
You could also use the free Word Online. Microsoft Word Online - Work together on Word documents

Thanks for your help both, I can install 365 with a link (my mum has it and they do a family membership thing I think).

The only reason I havent' so far is I am paranoid that something will implode and I will lose all my files.

Looks as if I may not have a choice now though!

You will not lose your files. Have your mum send you a link so that you can use her subscription.
