Default Restarting footnote and endnote numbering? Can I have a style that starts a new section?

Dear Friends, Hope you are well.

I am working on a project and I just "feel" I am going about it wrong, and was interested in hearing your input:

I have one main text of an ancient manuscript. To this text, I will attach footnotes and endnotes. Footnotes for Textual variants and endnotes for more substance-based notes. OK, that is simple so far.

But this ancient MSS has 8(!!) commentaries to it. to each of these commentaries I want to attach text varients in the FN (of the commentaries) and substance notes in the EN (to the commentaries).

I would have thought to use main and sub documents but this doesn't seem to allow me the ease of navigation that I want.

What road should I pursue?

All and any assistance is appreciated!!

Susan

First, do not use the Master Documents "Feature" in Microsoft Word.

Are your commentaries separate documents? If so, just keep them that way.
When done, save each as pdf and concatenate the pdf files.

Alternatively, have the main text and commentaries in separate Word Sections. Restart your footnote numbering at the beginning of each section and set your endnotes to be at the end of each section and restart numbering.

Thank you for your reply.
Thank you for the advice not to use master docs.
I want to keep things together. So I guess section breaks would be the most efficient way to do things.

Question:
Is there a way to set a style to force it to start a new section? I can only see that you can put a page break before a style, but don't see the option to put a section break?

There is no way to make a section break part of a style. You could add a keyboard shortcut or a QAT button for a section break.
