default dotx
Hi. I am a script writer and have default templates for starting each script. Is it possible to have a default word format so when I open word it is automaticaly taylored for me. I don't for example like the default 1 inch border.

The default template is Normal.dotm which is stored in the user templates folder If you have not changed the default location enter or copy
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates to the address window of Windows File Explorer and you will be taken to this folder. Note that this folder is normally hidden. You can modify that template if you wish, but a better plan would be to create document templates for your work documents, each setup as you require for the job in hand. Frankly the most recent versions of Word are poor when it comes to template handling, but to work around that you may find Select Document Template useful in managing your templates from wherever they are stored.

You can create a template and start Word by double-clicking on that template (or a shortcut / alias to that template).
Do not try to replace the normal.dotm template with your template. See also: |

Okay. I could make a copy of the dotm with another name and edit the dotm. However how would change the default? You mention the default location %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates. On my PC it is
C:\Users\Main-PC\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates Do I need to rename this or change word to look at another default? What I mean is does it have to be called normal.dotm and does it have to be .dotm and not dotx Don’t understand copy . . . to the address window of Windows File Explorer. What I mean is am i changing a configuration file in word to point to a difrent name? --- UPDATE --- Okay. The next thing I find is this. I copy normal to the desktop. I open it change the margins and save it back. I get a message “This will be upgraded to the latest version.” This is a message I would get if I worked on an old document under a previous version of word. Why if this came with MS word 2016? I copied this back to the windows folder renaming the original first. Now windows can not open the dotm. |

You want to Open the normal.dotm file, not double-click on it.
How to Open the Normal Template in Any Desktop Version of Word (except Mac 2008) Double-clicking on a template creates a new document; it does not open the template. |

Okay/ I know it did that but having saved it, I renamed it back. The right clicking does work. Thanks.
