Today (9/30) my company pushed out an update to Windows. Ok, so far. At lunch I rebooted to install those updates.
This morning I was working in Word and there were no spelling issues (other than my own inability to speell two good ) and the spell checker was using the default American English. When I came back and started up Word again, now it insists on using British English for spell checking--but only in the comments!?
I go to Words Options/Language and the Office Display box says Match Microsoft Windows [English]. Which I assume means it uses what ever the Windows setting is. The Office authoring languages and proofing box only has one option, English (United States). Both are set to preferred. English is the only language I have installed.
I check Window's Regional settings and it is set correctly as English (United States).
I have changed to British English and back again and have rebooted--to no avail. It still is trying to do things the British English way. Any ideas as to how to fix this?
I am running Version 2107 (Build 14428.20324) of Word and

Spelling language can be applied to a word or a paragraph and hence vary a lot within a single document. Each paragraph style has a spelling language associated with as a default so if you keep seeing this despite changing an instance it is likely due to the language on a style.

When you create a new comment, the style which is applied to it is called "Comment Text". Try updating that style's language attribute.

Another post had a link to Mastering the Spelling Checker. There it told me about a menu option I was unaware of. I went and checked and the body of the document uses American English, but Comment text used British English. I changed it for the body of the document because it had mixed language usage.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to change it for all comments in the document since I can select only one comment at a time. I have told it to set it to default, to no avail. I even opened the template, made the change there, and....it did not stick still back to BE.
I finished reading Guessed's post. The Language selection for the Comment Text in the style sheet was none. I set it to AE. While it did not change the current comments, all new ones are correct.
How they got different settings is unknown, but the Spelling Checker site explained how it could be possible.

Found the answer to this!

Go to 'Review' in the ribbon: 'Language' drop down: 'Set proofing language...' select language preferred from the list, BUT be sure to then click at the bottom left of the menu box 'Set As Default' before closing by clicking 'Ok'
