Default Troubleshooting styles based on Normal and List styles

Hello,

Firstly I create style "My Style" which is based on the style Normal. After that, I create style "My List" using default values (there is no "based on" field).

After that, I write a couple of paragraphs using My Style, and add add a list with 4-5 items.

The problem is that when I modify My Style (for example, change font or spacing) the chainging reflects to both text within My Style, but also to the My List. I'd expect changing only the properties that are directly connected with the appropriate style.

Miscrosoft 2003, SP3.

Thanks

Sounds like your 'My List' style is not a paragraph style but a list style. So it probably doesn't have font or spacing attributes of its own and gets that from the underlying paragraph style you apply the list style to.

I don't use list styles - I make paragraph styles for all lists I want to use.

Like Andrew, I associate my numbering with styles, using the procedures set forth in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. This is the only known bullet-proof method of setting up numbering using automatic numbering. The simple list dialog does not have the needed tools, you need to use the multilevel list dialog.

If you created a list style, you can only change the font settings for the list number itself (applies to levels that are using numeric or alphabetical "numbering"—not to bullets).

As Andrew and Charles have suggested, if you are setting up numbering, there are specific considerations that you have to make. See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010 | ShaunaKelly.com.

Charles, I don;t quite understand your comment. I have used SK's method for years, but it involves both list style(s) and paragraph styles. How is it that you "associate numbering" with para styles, not list styles.

Thank you, guys. I think i am going to use Paragraph Style Type instead of list Style type, because it gives me more possibilitties.
