Default Disable spell check for open doc only

I am trying to read an open doc but get distracted by the clutter created by red lines on the text that is technical and the things getting underlined are not words in a dictionary, so I want to make them disappear, temporarily.

I've found lots of tutorials for disabling spellcheck globally, but I just make the markings gone locally, in the document I'm trying to read, temporarily.

You can make use of the "Hide spelling errors in this document only" option at File > Options > Proofing to suppress the spellcheck in the active document.

The easiest way is to use the Status Bar to set your language options. If your status bar already shows the spell check language then you in business. If not, right click the status bar and ensure there is a tick next to the Language option.

To turn off the red underlines for the entire document:
1. Select All by pressing Ctrl-A
2. Click on the language shown in the status bar to open the Language dialog.
3. In that dialog, check the option that says "Do not check spelling or grammar" and click OK.

Default No Language

Thanks for your detailed response.

My status bar does not display Language so I right-clicked the bar to tick the language option, but found it already ticked.

So are you saying you can't see a language setting at all? It will be a particular language, not the word 'language'.

Sometimes, you have to fiddle a bit to make Word display status bar options. Make sure that only one document window is open, right-click the status bar and choose which options you want to see. Restart Word. This ensures that the settings are correctly written to the registry.

Note that checking the box for no spell checking is a type of character formatting. It persists with the character until it is unchecked. The first option suggested by Stefan is superior to checking that box, in my opinion.

Should have read all the way to the end! I thought this was global. It wasn't! Thanks

Yes, it isn't there.

Turns out the first advice answered the question, I just didn't read far enough and assumed that Options would be global.

That doesn't answer the missing language option on the status bar, but it's moot now. Thanks for hanging in!

You were right, I went back and reread his answer. Thanks for prompting me to do that. Problem solved.
