Redact a pdf copy/pasted into word
Is there any better way to redact lines in a pdf that has been copy/pasted into a word doc than the multiple clicks it takes to insert a text box, make it white, and no outlines? Started a new role at work and this is unbelievably inefficient in the number of clicks it takes to do some things. |

Sticking white boxes over the top of text does NOT redact it. The text is still there and can be read by absolutely anyone. To redact it properly, you need to ensure the redacted characters can never be recovered from the file.
See 3 Ways to Redact in Word - wikiHow for some ideas on how to do this.

The following procedure does not work with Word but the end result is compatible with Word so the redacted document can be opened in Word afterwards: -
Use LibreOffice Writer to redact Word documents. See How to use document redaction in LibreOffice 6.3.0.4 - TechRepublic Note that LibreOffice is now on version 7.2. See Home | LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Based on OpenOffice - Compatible with Microsoft It is proper redaction and may be an acceptable workaround? Thanks for the ideas folks To the first poster, when I stick white boxes over things snipped and pasted to a word page, then save and upload that image, I don't think anybody will ever be able to know what text was there. I was just looking for ways to do this with less clicks as I am learning new areas of work in my company. Thanks to all for your input

jbrow1: Even if you save your "redacted" document as pdf, the text under your textboxes will still be there. It could be recovered from the pdf and might even be found by someone not looking for it. If you are saving as a jpg, then you are correct.

If your redact to image save converts the entire page into a pure bitmap format with no layers then your redacts should be safe. This will mean that the visible text can't be searched either though. However if there are layers or you save to Word, PDF, vector or metadata image format then the white boxes are likely to mask the data and it can still be read.

Hi everybody Thank you for all the words and ideas. I'm not really sure how these things save when they end up where they end up.
I was really just looking for a tool, or way to lessen the amount of clicks I had to make to redact prices and names. What I do is take some documents, piece them together, redact contact info and prices into a word document using "snip." I then upload this document to my companies database, where in the end, it gets printed out, and used in the notes of a vehicle sale. So really it's not for confidentiality entirely, but more just less clicks. As the end user after my company, is only seeing it on paper. But yes, it could go to court. But the things I'm redacting are not secret if it went to court, it would all be in the very beginning of what I do, and there are no secrets there, it's free and open if it gets to that point. |

Not necessarily using snip. I snip documents sent to me into a word doc, then use shape boxes, white color, and no border, to redact. Upload doc to my companies database, somebody else prints it out and does what they do with it. I just process it through my queue. I just like to be as efficient as I can, and clicking shape box, white, no border, gets old. I thought there might be a better way. But honestly, even if there was, I can't just download tools on my company computer. But I could ask IT to look into said tool.

If you are saving as a bitmap, I would be using black highlighting on black text. That is not much clicking.
If you are showing those regions as white instead (assuming your background is white), you could select and apply a character style that is white. Both options work for a bitmap/snip output format.
