Text does not appear in defined style (font size)
Hello,
I defined several styles in word, one of them is a style I'm using in table texts. When I open the style with "Modify...". I can see that the font size is defined to be 11pts. The problem now is: When I select some text and apply the style, the font size of that text is changed to 10pts instead of 11pts. What is the problem here? Why am I not getting 11pts as it is defined in the style? I'm having several documents with that problem, but I also have documents where this mistake does not appear. But when I try to copy one of the tables in a "corrupt" document to a functioning document, the table is still corrupt. Thank you in advance. BR, lis |

Settings of the Normal style must match the corresponding settings in the document defaults, for table styles formatting to work properly. This is one of the stranger requirements in Word.
In the sample document, which I am returning here, I have also modified the point size in the table style itself. There are many confusing combinations of settings between the Normal style, the document defaults, and table styles. The underlying explanation is the convoluted hierarchy of styles and formatting in Word (I do not pretend to understand all the details).

Thank you for your help.
But this solution is somehow still not working for me. The table text still has 10pts plus it switches to Times New Roman now, instead of Calibri like it is defined in the style. Do you know if there is some kind of documentation on the hierarchy of styles? BR, lisa |

I don't fully understand it but using "Table Normal" or "Table Grid" for your table styles is the basic problem. The interaction of table styles with paragraph styles is not something I have not been able to solve YET.
If you change the table style to something else (it is currently Table Grid), then you will find the styling easier to handle.

If you are referring to the Table Header Text style which has been applied to the table cell on the left, note that that style is formatted in 10 points. You will have to customize the style definition.

@Stefan Blom: No I mean the second column with the Style "Table Text". When I open your modified .docx, the text in the right cell is in Times New Roman with font size 10. |

Which size did you want? Have you tried modifying the Table Text paragraph style?

Yes it's indeed confusing if it shows something else for you. The right cell should have 11pts with Calibri. How do I modify the Table Text paragraph style?

Click in the text paragraph and press Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Apply Styles pane. Click the Modify button.

The style is already defined how I want it to be (Calibri + 11pts), but when I apply that style, it's Times New Roman with 10pts. So I don't want to modify it.
But if I modify it to e.g. font size 9, it applies font size 9, but the font is still Times New Roman. Is that different for you when you open the document? |

I am aware that the font name is not what you want, in my modified version. That is a side-effect of my setting the document defaults and the Normal style to match each other. You will have to customize the aspects of the Table Text style that you want to be different from the specified defaults. The difficult part with text formatting in tables is that it is affected by several different sources (the table style itself, the Normal style, custom paragraph styles, the document defaults). This is a confusing design choice made by the Word developers.

You change the table style by putting your cursor inside the table and then going to Table Tools > Design tab. You will see the table styles as big buttons and you change the current table from "Table Grid" to anything other than "Table Normal". Once you've done that, you can change the attributes of the table directly or modify your chosen table style. If you choose to modify the table style, DON'T apply any font settings.

I'm looking at your modified version. In my original document only the font size was a problem. Now, in your modified version, the font size and the font itself are not as defined in the Table Text style. So I understood that all those settings need to somehow fit to each other, but when I change the Normal style, the document default and the my custom Table Text style to be the same, it is still not working. So if you have a instruction based on the file I shared how I can get Calibri 11pts to work with the "Table Text" custom style, that would be great. |

I have now modified the font in the table style itself. It seems to be working now. Post back if there are any remaining inconsistencies.
