Default How to stop word to apply the same format to the line above when inserting a new one:

Hello everybody,

I hope you are well.

I have tried to deactivate this function by going into file > options > proofing > Autocorrect options > Autoformat as you type and then I have unchecked format beginning of list…

However, when I type in a line, underline, make it bold and then hit enter, the line below has the same format (underlined and bold) and I don´t want that to happen.

Can you please help.

Thanks
Sanchez

To "turn off" character formatting and revert to the settings of the underlying paragraph style, press Ctrl+SpaceBar.

  1. I suspect it is not a new line but paragraph.
  2. Learn to use styles, really! Importance of Styles in Word Had you used styles you could set what happens when you press enter.
  3. Otherwise Word continues the formatting.

Hi both,

Thanks for your answers.

Here it is an example to understand my question better:

I underline type of files and when I do so and then press enter to start writing about it, word automatically underlines the line below "Types of files", "There are 5 different types"
I would like that word would not do so like I have manually done below.

Types of files

There are 5 different types.

Thanks

Direct formatting will usually be preserved as you continue typing, unless you are typing in a paragraph style which has a different style set as the "Style for following paragraph."

As I wrote, the easiest way to revert to the settings of the underlying paragraph style is by pressing Ctrl+SpaceBar, which runs the ResetChar built-in command in Word for Windows. If you are working mostly with direct formatting, you may lose other settings as well in the process. You should modify the document defaults to include the font characteristics you use most of the time.

Stefan - Thanks a lot.
I think you are right control + spacebar is the best option as I think the autocorrect option are a bit odd. Even I uncheck the boxes, word is still picking up the format.

Hi everyone,

Is there any way to remove the style and the format too? Is it all done by control+space?

Thanks

You can't remove all style and format - despite what the Word GUI misleadingly says. There is ALWAYS a Paragraph Style applied and that style has formatting associated with it.

However, you can remove local formatting and apply a 'default' style called Normal via a command either called "Clear Formatting" or 'Clear All' - see Remove Styles from Text in Word - Instructions - TeachUcomp, Inc.

Ctrl-Space removes local font formatting including Character Style (if there was one) but it doesn't change the paragraph style applied. Ctrl-Q removes local paragraph formatting and doesn't change the paragraph style.

Andrew is quite correct. You can't bypass styles entirely in Word. There is always an underlying paragraph style in a Word document (usually the Normal style unless you explicitly picked a style yourself).

If you are using Word much at all, if it is an important tool in your life, it is really time you took a bit of time to learn about Styles. Here's why: Importance of Styles in Word
Here's a good spot to get started: Tips for Understanding Styles in Word by Shauna Kelly

You can set the paragraph style in one paragraph to use a different style in the following paragraph. This gets triggered when you press Enter at the end of a paragraph. (If you press enter somewhere in the paragraph not at the end, the current style continues.)
