the word 2002 document worked happily in win 7.
in win10 there is the well known problem. it is a 30 year documnet. at the top of page one are the years, 2000, 2001 etc. before i could ctrl click on a date say 2001 and it would go to the text in the page relating to that year. as win 10 wont allow that. what is the workaround? thanks all |

If those are in a Table of Contents, try updating the TOC.
If not, why not? A table of contents gives you clickable links and could be set to reflect those headings. Generating a Table of Contents |

If you apply the Heading 1 style (which you can modify) to your years at the top of the page, they will automatically appear in a Table of Contents.
If not using a TOC, which is the easiest method, ... Select each year and add a Bookmark with the appropriate name (must start with a letter, not a number, in the name, so could use y2009 as a name but not 2009). Then on your title page or index page, insert a hyperlink or cross-reference to the appropriate bookmark. |

Thanks but how do i tell word where the link is supposed to go?
If i click on 2019, how does it know to go to the text about 2019 several pages away? You may also want to look at Why Use Word's Built-In Heading Styles? by Shauna Kelly. |

If you format the paragraph containing 2019 in Heading Style 1, 2019 will appear in the TOC. When the TOC is formed, Word will create a hidden "bookmark" for that location and the line in the TOC will act as a hyperlink to the text later in the document.

The table of contents is configured without page numbers and is in a section with five columns. I set the years in heading 1 style. I generated a table of contents and set it to not have page numbers. The numbers appear. Ctrl+Click takes you to them. |

What were you trying to do when you got this error message?
What, exactly, were you doing. My example was produced in Windows 10. |
